Mt. SAC Coaches/Student-Athletes Give Back During Their Summer "Off Time"

Mt. SAC Coaches/Student-Athletes Give Back During Their Summer "Off Time"

(Los Angeles, CA) While most coaches are enjoying the last weeks of their 2015 summer vacation, a number of Mt. SAC Coaches have been busy giving back in various ways.

This year a number of Mountie staff members and student/athletes are spending time helping with the 2015 Special Olympic World Games, which are being held in Los Angeles, from July 25th through August 2nd.  Head Women's Softball Coach, Ruby Rojas, is serving as the Competition Manager for the softball portion of the Special Olympics which is being held at Easton Stadium, on the UCLA Campus.  Along with Rojas, Assistant Basketball Coach and Mt. SAC Hall of Fame Athletic Trainer, Carsandra Taylor and a few student/athletes are helping Rojas, by volunteering their time with Special Olympics Softball.

Assistant Track and Field Coach, Edmund Pula, is serving as the Athletics (Track and Field) Competition Manager.  The Track and Field Portion of the Special Olympics, is being held at Locker Stadium on the USC Campus.  Head Men's Track and Field/Cross Country Coach, Ron Kamaka, along with newly hired Full-Time Professor and Assistant Track and Field Coach, Giovanni Lanaro are volunteering as the "right hand" men to Pula, with Lanaro heading up the track events and Kamaka heading up the field events.

Half way up California, in Clovis, Head Women's Track and Field/Cross Country, Doug Todd, his wife Janet (announcers), Assistant Track and Field Coach, Brian Yokoyama (Co-Director) and retired Head Track and Field/Cross Country Coach, Mike Goff (Meet Manager) continued their longstanding tradition, volunteering/runnning the North American Pole Vaulting Championships which are held in the streets of Old Town Clovis.  Over 10,000 screaming fans were on hand to cheer on some of the nation's best pole vaulters in the 21st annual event.  Like the Special Olympics, this event was featured in every local newspaper and television station in the area.

Finally, right here in Walnut, Men's Soccer Head Coach, Juan Sanchez and his staff, gave back to the local community by providing free soccer clinics for children 5-7 throughout the summer.  Over 300 kids participated in the free clinics which were held on weekday evenings here at Mt. SAC.
