Mounties Rally in Third but Can’t Overcome Whittier

Whittier, Calif. – The Mt. SAC Men's Water Polo team came up short in a 16-11 loss to Whittier College on Saturday, September 13. With the defeat, the Mounties move to 3-2 on the season but remain atop the South Coast Conference with a .600 winning percentage. They were ranked No. 7 in the latest CCCWPCA state poll.

Mt. SAC struck first as Aidan Gillooly opened the scoring just over a minute into the game. However, Whittier responded with two goals to end the first quarter with a narrow 2-1 lead in a tightly contested start.

In the second quarter, the Mounties added goals from Paco Lopez and Lucas Heath, but the Poets countered with three of their own to extend their lead to 6-3 at halftime.

The Mounties rallied in the third period, scoring five times—two goals from Trevor Davis and one each from Jacob Carlson, Nazareth Longoria-Morasky, and Lopez, who tallied his second of the game. Mt. SAC trimmed the deficit to just two, trailing 10-8 heading into the final frame.

Whittier closed out the game strong, netting six fourth-quarter goals to seal the win. The Mounties added three more goals—courtesy of Longoria-Morasky, Davis, and Nicolas Flores—but couldn't close the gap.

Goalkeeper Michael Hale recorded 12 saves on 28 Whittier shots.
