Walnut, Calif. – After three consecutive draws, the Mt. SAC Men's Soccer Team broke through with a decisive 4-2 victory over No. 17-ranked Oxnard on Tuesday, September 16. With the win, the Mounties improve to 2-1-3 and currently sit third in the South Coast Conference. Oxnard, suffering its first loss of the season, falls to 2-1-1 and now holds second place in the Western State North Conference.
Despite their strong history, Mt. SAC was left out of the top 20 in the season's first CCCSIA Men's Soccer Poll, debuting at No. 38. However, a convincing win over a top-ranked opponent like Oxnard could give the Mounties a boost in the next poll.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Oxnard opened the scoring in the 10th minute to take an early lead. But Mt. SAC responded just before halftime when Nathan Nunez scored off a pass from Moises Prado, leveling the match at 1-1.
The Mounties took control in the second half. In the 54th minute, Alfonso Ramirez set up Hunter Lemos to give Mt. SAC the lead. They extended it in the 77th minute when Rafael Avalos fired home a shot assisted by Alexis Gomez.
Oxnard stayed in the fight, pulling one back in the 84th minute to make it 3-2. But Fabian Barajas sealed the match for the Mounties with a late goal in the 87th minute.
Interestingly, both teams converted every shot on goal, with no saves recorded by either goalkeeper throughout the match.
