(Lancaster, CA) Behind a career-high 26 points from sophomore guard Caira Benton, the Mt. SAC Women's Basketball team defeated Glendale College, 83-54, in an opening-round game of the Annual Antelope Valley College Holiday Tournament Friday afternoon at Marauder Gym.
The Mounties, 11-1, who are ranked third in the CCCAA state coaches' poll, will face So Cal No. 8-ranked Cypress in the tournament semifinals Saturday at 5:00 pm.
Sophomores Allyah George (7 of 12 FG, 3-4 FT, 6 RB) and Kali Jones (4-6 FG, 2-2 FT) added 17 and 10 points respectively for Mt. SAC.
With the score tied, 50-50, after three quarters, Mt. SAC, behind ten points from Benton, outscored Glendale, 33-4, to put the game away to record its sixth straight win.
In the game, Benton was near-perfect from the field hitting 11 of 14 field goals and was 4 of 7 at the charity stripe. Defensively, she grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds and had three steals.
As a team the Mounties nearly doubled up on rebounds in the game with 41. Glendale had 24.
Also scoring for the Mounties was sophomore guard Maddeline Dopplick (4 RB, 6 assists) with seven points and three players had six apiece – Dominique McLaughlin (2-2 FT, 5 RB), Aliyah Dickson (2-3 FG, 2-3 FT) and Tshlene Bentley (3-5 FG).
