(Long Beach, CA) The No. 9 Mt. SAC Football Team came away with a big 36-20 win over host No. 16 Long Beach City College Saturday night (Sept. 14) at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
"Great team effort and a very tough place to play," Mt. SAC Coach Bob Jastrab said. "The defense held Long Beach to 23 plays in the first half."
"In that span (9 series) the Vikings had five punts, a safety against them, a fumble recovery, two interceptions and zero points."
Mt. SAC (2-0) was led by quarterback Zach Rangel (22 for 36), who threw three touchdowns and had a game-high 182 yards.
Wide receiver Sean Bowden had seven catches for a game-high 64 yards and a TD, while Jordan Erby caught six passes for 46 yards for the Mounties.
On the ground, Rachaad White led all running backs with 112 yards on 20 carries.
White got the scoring started for the Mounties in the first five minutes of the game with a nine-yard TD reception from Rangel for the 7-0 lead.
Linebacker Travis Tuitasi gave the Mounties a 9-0 lead after he sacked LBCC quarterback Derrach West in the end zone with 7:03 left in the quarter.
Rangel tossed two more TD's in the second quarter to Bowden (29 yards) and Yamar Woods (2 yards) for the 22-0 lead at the half.
Early in the third quarter, Jonathan Schofield (2 carries, 40 yards) ran for a 38-yard score and the 29-0 lead.
Just four minutes later, the Vikings began their comeback with two touchdowns in the quarter to close the gap to 15 points, 29-14.
The Mounties Malaki Thompson extended Mt. SAC's lead to 22 points (36-14) with 5:02 left in the game on a 12-yard run.
The Vikings added a score with 1:53 left in the game to close out the scoring.
