(Walnut, CA) In the second week of the 2024 Mt. SAC Beach Volleyball season, the Mounties remained unbeaten with a 5-0 sweep over visiting Orange Coast College on Friday, February 2, on a brisk morning match.
After opening the season with two victories last week, Mt. SAC remains perfect with a 3-0 record.
Three of the five Mountie pairs (1's, 2's, and 5's) won in straight sets, while the 3's and 4's were victorious in three sets.
The No. 2 pairs, sophomores Elizabeth Ortiz and Capri Salmon, gave Mt. SAC a 1-0 lead with an easy straight-set 21-9, 21-8 win.
This was quickly followed by another two-set sweep by the 5's freshman duo of Eva Becerra and Freda Lei (21-14, 24-22) for the 2-0 lead
Mt. SAC's No. 1's Zyra Green and Candace Ceballos clinched the match over the Pirates with an exciting 21-17, 22-20 win for the 3-0 lead out of the best of five matches.
Another freshman pair of Jillian de Leon and Kyra Miller dropped their first set, 21-14, but reversed the result and won by the same score of 21-14 to even the match at 1-1.
The pair came away with a 15-9 third-set win to give Mt. SAC its fourth victory of the morning.
Midway through the final match, with the first four complete, the remainder of the Mountie players cheered on the 3's team of Naara Ortega and Andrea Brewer with three exciting and very competitive sets. They opened with a 21-18 win in set one, and OCC came back with the same score of 21-18 to even the match, 1-1. Late in the match with the score tied, 13-13, the two players won two consecutive points to win the third set, 15-13, completing the 5-0 sweep.
Mt. SAC travels to Huntington Beach on Friday (Feb. 9) with a double dual against Golden West and Cuesta College.
