(Whittier, CA) In a South Coast Conference-opening match for both teams on Friday, Sept. 16, Mt. San Antonio College defeated host Rio Hondo College, 3-1 (25-11, 25-19, 19-25, 25-19).

The Roadrunners (2-4, 0-1) dropped the first two games and won the third, forcing a fourth, in which the Mounties (8-3, 1-0) sealed the win.

"It's great to start off conference with a win," Mt. SAC Volleyball coach Samantha Neely said. "We stuck together as a team and pushed past a very scrappy Rio Hondo team.

"We still have a lot to work on but we are moving in a positive direction."

Allison Whiteman (13 kills), Riley DeGroot (13 digs, eight kills), Riannel Arevalo (17 digs), Kylie Rhodes (10 digs, 12 assists), JJ Quarrels (eight kills, three service aces), Capri Salmon (20 assists), and Angelina Burton (seven kills) helped lead Mt. SAC to victory.

"Kyra Miller broke into the starting lineup tonight and contributed some crucial blocks for our team," coach Neely said. "Angelina (Burton) found herself at the service line tonight with quite a few service runs for us. We are proud of them both for stepping into different roles and delivering."

Cerritos College (0-8, 0-1) will visit Walnut for an SCC matchup with the Mounties on Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 6 p.m.
