(Walnut, CA) After suffering two consecutive South Coast Conference losses to PCC and L.A. Harbor recently, the Mt. SAC Women's Volleyball team bounced back and has won the last two, with the latest a 3-1 win over visiting Long Beach City College Wednesday (September 29).

The Mounties defeated LBCC (25-19, 24-26, 25-16, 25-19) for the first time in six seasons with the last win coming in 2015.

With her second-highest output in kills this season, freshman outside hitter JJ Quarrels (1 Service Ace, 4 Digs) had 18 (.333 killing %) to lead the Mounties. Quarrels had a season-high 23 earlier in the season against Santa Barbara City College.

"JJ was really on fire (Wednesday)," Mt. SAC Women's Volleyball coach Samantha Neely said. "It not only showed in her performance, but the smile on her face and her confidence on the court really set the tone for the rest of the team.

"It's a good home win and against a team like Long Beach (6-5, 4-2). They're a talented team."

With the win, the Mounties improved to 8-4 overall and 3-2 in the conference.

In the deciding fourth set, Quarrels had multiple kills late in the set for the win.

"It feels great coming off of those two tough losses from the past two weeks," Quarrels said. "This was a tough, gritty team. So, especially getting all of those kills in a row and then just getting all of that energy at the end, it was just a great team win."

With the second-most kills on the team was outside hitter Riley DeGroot (6 Digs) with 16, followed by OH Allison Whiteman (1 SA, 2 D) with 15.

"We just needed to change our energy (after the two losses) and it worked," DeGroot said. "Each of us just needed to play our role and I thought we did really good (Wednesday)."

With the fourth time totaling 40 or more assists in a match, was setter Ally Euston (6 D) with 41.

Playing her usual good game-saving multiple shots from the Long Beach front line players, Libero Riannel Arevalo (1 K, 1A) had 12 digs.

In the first set with the scored tied, 8-8, Quarrels served five straight winners, which included kills from Whiteman and DeGroot, and the Mounties took a 13-9 lead.

The Mounties kept the lead the rest of the way and DeGroot finished off the 25-19 win with a tip over the net.

In the second set, with neither team taking more than a three-point lead, Whiteman gave the Mounties the 24-23 lead with a kill. But, Long Beach won the last three points for the win to even the match, 1-1.

The third set was all Mounties, as they led all the way and won by eight points to take a 2-1 lead in sets.

In the fourth and final set, there were nine ties, with the last one at 17-17.

That's when Quarrels took over with eight kills to put the match away for Mt. SAC.

The Mounties take a break from SCC action Friday (Oct. 1) with a non-conference match against Southwestern College (3-7).
