(Walnut, CA) For the second double-dual meet in a row, the Mt. SAC Women's Swimming and Diving team won one and lost one, as they hosted their second meet of the year at the Marie T. Mills Aquatics Center Friday (May 7).

They defeated Santa Monica, 151-135, and lost to Ventura, 166-144.

"The girls finished 1-1, which was great," Mt. SAC Assistant coach Lani Ruh said. "We beat Santa Monica, who had some great swimmers too, in a very close meet.

"The meet against Ventura was very close. I think the big difference was the one-two-three finish (16 pts) in diving and that is tough to come back from."

Leading the way for the Mounties was sophomore Valerie Chen and freshman Melissa Chavez with two wins each.

Chen won her fifth and sixth individual events of the season, capturing firsts in the 500 Freestyle (6:05.71) and 50 Butterfly (29.17) and also a second in the 400 IM (5:24.46) and third in the 100 Fly (1:05.49).

Chavez won both the 50 Breaststroke (34.78) and the 100 Individual Medley (1:10.81) and a second in the 100 Breast (1:15.67) and third in the 50 Free (22.87).

Freshman Isabell Ortega took home three seconds in the 50 Free (22.78), 200 Free (2:14.21) and the 100 IM (1:11.50).

The Mounties finished third in all three relays – 200 Medley Relay, 200 Free Relay and the 400 Free Relay.

Mt. SAC, which has been swimming in the Western States Conference for this season only, hopes to swim one last event in the season-ending conference finals.

The team will find out sometime this week if they will compete.
