After a tough start to the Mt. SAC / Nike / Azteca Soccer Tournament with a 3-4 loss against the College of Southern Nevada, the Mt. SAC Women's Soccer Team demonstrated resilience and determination with a 4-0 win over the highly competitive San Joaquin Delta College on Sunday, August 25.
Coach Juan Sanchez commended the team's effort, saying, "Their ability to bounce back was good to witness, especially against one of the top teams from the north."
Forward Eden Ramirez kicked things off in the 16th minute, capitalizing on a precise pass from Brianna Bernal in the 18-yard box to slot the ball past Delta's goalkeeper and put Mt. SAC ahead 1-0. Bernal showcased her skills once again in the 55th minute, delivering a perfectly placed diagonal pass from a throw-in to midfielder Kathryn Davis, who maneuvered around a defender to extend the lead to 2-0.
Ramirez continued to shine, earning a penalty in the 62nd minute with a skillful run into the box. She converted the penalty, placing the ball in the upper right center of the goal and extending Mt. SAC's lead to 3-0. The final goal came in the 85th minute when Leah Montelongo was fouled in the box and subsequently scored from the penalty spot, sealing the 4-0 victory.
The Mt. SAC Women's defense allowed only one shot on goal, which goalkeeper Anai Olmedo expertly saved by tipping it over the crossbar. The Mounties were relentless in their attack, firing 11 shots on goal throughout the match.
With this win, the Mt. SAC Women's Soccer Team has a 1-1 record in the tournament. They are set to face a top team from the south, San Jacinto, on Friday, August 30, at 6:00 PM.
