Gutierrez scores late goal over Citrus; Mountie Women’s Soccer advance to So Cal Rd 2

(Walnut, CA) With a goal in the last possible minute, the Mt. SAC Women's Soccer team defeated Citrus, 1-0, in a CCCAA Southern California first-round game Saturday night (Nov. 20).

The No. 4 Mounties will face No. 12 College of the Canyons (14-4-1), an upset 4-3 winner in overtime over No. 5 San Diego Mesa, in a second-round game on Tuesday (November 23). The game will be played at Mt. SAC at 1 pm.

Freshman midfielder Kaylee Gutierrez scored after a block of a penalty kick shot.

"The game went down to the wire with a penalty kick block and redirection back into the goal," Mt. SAC Women's coach Juan Sanchez said. "It took a while to make a decision on the goal.

"I'm very proud of the women's team and the effort and hard work they put in (Saturday)."

Since Sanchez took over the women's program in 2019, it is the second consecutive season that the team has advanced to the second round of the CCCAA So Cal's.

Since the 2000 season, the Mounties have advanced to four So Cal second-round games.

With the win, Mt. SAC improves to 15-2-5 overall and has a streak of 17 unbeaten games in a row, which includes 12 wins and five ties.

Of the 17 games, the Mounties have an incredible 10 shutouts.

The 15 wins are the best since the 2006 season when Mt. SAC had 16. The most wins came back in 2000 with an 18-4 record.

Mt. SAC has won two CCCAA State Championships in 1992 and '95.
