(Walnut, CA) The Mt. SAC Women's Basketball team continues to roll with an easy 82-44 win over visiting Rio Hondo in a South Coast Conference North game on Friday, February 2. The win marked the 16th consecutive victory for the Mounties (20-2, 3-0), the second-longest streak in the state behind No. 1 Butte College (23-1), which holds a record of 20 consecutive wins. Mt. SAC's last loss occurred in early December.
Butte College's sole loss of the season was at the hands of the Mounties in the championship game of the Mt. SAC Linda G. Smith Memorial Classic.
Sophomore guard Dailani Richardson, who tied her season-high scoring with 25 points, led the state's second-ranked Mounties. Richardson had a 9-of-17 field goal record, connected on three 3-pointers, made 4 of 5 free throws, grabbed five rebounds, and had three steals.
Also in double figures for the Mounties was sophomore guard Asia Gibson (8-18 FGM-A, 1-3 3 PM-A, 9 RB, 3 A, 4 Stls.), contributing a season-high 17 points. Freshman forward Alana Diaz (7-13 FGM-A, 6 RB, 3 A, 2 Blks.) also scored a season-high 14 points. True to fashion, the Mounties' bench came through with 37 points.
A strong first quarter by the Mounties set the tone for the game as they led 21-6. They added another 21 points in the second quarter, establishing a 42-19 lead at the break. Richardson led with 11 points in the third, giving Mt. SAC a 63-37 lead heading into the final quarter. The Mountie defense continued to swarm the Roadrunners in the fourth, holding them to only seven points.
With only six games left in the regular season, Mt. SAC continues SCC North action on Wednesday, February 7, at L.A. Trade Tech.
