Mounties top host Antelope Valley in overtime to capture third place in AVC Tourney

(Lancaster, CA) In a game that involved nine ties and 14 lead changes, Mt. SAC (9-4) outlasted host Antelope Valley, 54-52, in overtime to capture third place in the 18th annual Antelope Valley Holiday Tournament on Sunday.

Trailing 45-44 late in the fourth quarter, a Jade Hughes jumper put the Mounties up by one, 46-45, with 2:00 remaining on the clock. Antelope Valley (3-8) hit a pair of free throws with 0:01 left to take the lead, 47-46, but Mt. SAC's Natalia Shpegel was fouled as time expired. After missing the first, Shpegel connected on the second free throw, knotting the score at 47 and sending the game into overtime. 

With the score tied at 52 late in the extra period, Mt. SAC's Alexis Sanchez connected on a jump shot with 0:03 left, putting the Mounties up for good, 54-52.

Tiana Douglas led the Mounties with 16 points and seven rebounds, while teammate Hughes added 14 points and eight boards. Both players also blocked two shots. Lauryn Manns and Aujanae Mayes had seven rebounds each. Shpegel finished with nine points.

Sasha Duckett led Antelope Valley with 15 points, while teammates Semajynique Steen and Sara Navarro added 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Next up for the Mounties—who have won three of their last four—is an opening-round matchup with West Hills-Lemoore (1-7) in the Fullerton College Tournament on Thursday, Dec. 27, at 5:00 p.m.
