San Diego, Calif. – The Mt. SAC Men's Track & Field Team traveled south to compete in the annual Arnie Robinson Invitational, hosted by San Diego Mesa College on March 20–21. The two-day meet honors Olympic gold medalist Arnie Robinson, whose legacy continues to inspire generations of athletes.
Competing against a field made up of fellow two-year programs, Mt. SAC delivered a solid overall performance, highlighted by several event victories and a number of personal-best marks. While the meet provided valuable competitive opportunities, the Mounties also showed flashes of the higher standard they've established this season against four-year competition.
Leading the way on the track, Dillon Thomasson captured first place in the 400 meters with a personal-best time of 48.57, while Rashad Martin added a third-place finish in 49.41. In the 100 meters, Marques Guzman clocked a personal-best 10.62 to place third.
Mt. SAC's relay teams continued to build momentum. The 4x100 relay squad of Yannik Berg, Guzman, Armando Carbajal Jr., and Thomasson placed second with a personal-best time of 41.27. The 4x400 relay team of Thomasson, Dylan Ochoa, Martin, and Johnny Gardner IV also notched a personal-best performance, finishing third in 3:15.59.
In the field events, Ja'Len Taylor cleared a personal-best 6'8.75" to win the high jump, while Myles Massie led a strong showing in the triple jump with a first-place leap of 50'7.5". Brandyn Wetherspoon followed closely with a personal-best 48'10.25" to take second.
The Mounties also performed well in the horizontal jumps and throws. Tyrus Murguia recorded a personal-best 23'7.5" in the long jump to finish third. In the shot put, Duke Hemsley placed second with a personal-best throw of 49'1", and Andres Lambarena took third at 48'4". Caleb Garcia added a second-place finish in the pole vault, clearing 14'9".
NEXT UP:
The Mounties will return to competition at the Bob Larsen Distance Carnival and the Jim Bush Legends Meet, hosted by UCLA on March 27–28. With four-year programs back in the field, Mt. SAC will look to build on this weekend's performances and continue raising its level of competition as the season progresses.
