Mounties Battle for the Top Spot at 3C2A Track and Field Prelims

Mission Viejo, Calif. – After a highly competitive day at the 2025 3C2A Southern California Prelims, Mt. SAC finds itself in a close race for the team title, currently sitting in second place behind San Diego Mesa College.

On the track, Kerry Smith Jr. had a solid showing, placing fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.36 seconds and fourth in the 400-meter dash at 48.21 seconds. In the mid-distance events, Noah Gordon claimed first place in the 800 meters with a time of 1:52.71, followed by Jordan Berkley in fourth at 1:53.57. Berkley and teammate Noah Chairez also dominated the 1,500 meters, finishing first and second respectively with times of 4:01.15 and 4:01.87.

In the 10,000 meters, Diego Varela finished fourth in 32:01.61, and Joel Fischer placed fifth just behind him at 32:02.49. The 110-meter hurdles saw Ruben Delgado earn first place with a time of 14.64 seconds. Teammates Joshua Cervantes and Aidan Villasenor followed close behind in fourth and fifth place with times of 15.10 and 15.11 seconds, respectively. In the 400-meter hurdles, Zachary Felix and Cervantes placed fourth and fifth, clocking 54.90 and 55.00 seconds.

Jude Enriquez delivered a second-place finish in the steeplechase with a time of 9:32.21. In relay action, the 4x100-meter team—featuring Nicholas Nocero, Smith Jr., Shane Plourde, and Bradley Camping—finished fourth with a time of 41.84 seconds. The 4x400-meter relay squad—Nocero, Smith, Cervantes, and Gordon—claimed first place with a strong time of 3:18.07.

In field events, Evan Johnson cleared 6' 2.75" to earn third in the high jump, with Matthew Stauffer taking fifth at 6' 0.75". In pole vault, Nathaniel Zwisler secured second place by clearing 15' 7", while Quintin Dukes and Austin Pepito tied for third with heights of 13'11.25".

Brandyn Wetherspoon placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 21' 5.5", and fifth in the triple jump at 45' 1". In throwing events, Oluwatoni Babatunde finished fourth in the shot put with a mark of 46' 3.5" and fifth in the discus at 135' 2". Taiyo Ishiguro delivered an outstanding performance in the discus as well, taking first place with a throw of 199' 8".

The Mt. SAC men will return to Saddleback College for the 3C2A Southern California Finals on Saturday, May 10, where they'll look to close the gap and compete for the team title.
