Mountie Men's Track & Field takes top spot at SoCal Finals

(San Diego, CA) Through the prelims round of the 2023 California Community College Athletic Association Southern California Regional Championships, Mt. San Antonio College sat in second place with 36 points. That changed in the finals round at San Diego Mesa College on Friday, May 12, as the Mounties turned in 10 first-place, six second-place, and three third-place finishes to claim first place as a team with 223 points. Host SD Mesa, which held the top spot through the prelims, took second with 170 points and Riverside City College came in third with 142.

Mt. SAC will go for its second consecutive state title at the CCCAA State Championships at Modesto Junior College on Friday-Saturday, May 19-20.

At Friday's meet, first-place Mountie performances came from Jacob Williams (100 meters), Kerry Smith (200 meters), Johnathon Zavala (5000 meters), Jesus Alvarado (10,000 meters), Marcus Monroe Jr (high jump), Ethan Amata (pole vault), Namir Hemphill (triple jump), Matthew Mannino (javelin), the 4x100 relay team (Hemphill, Smith, Jake Jensen, Williams), and the 4x400 relay team (Thomas Scrofano, Nicholas Vargas, Nick Felix, Smith).

Jensen (200 meters), Zavala (10,000 meters), Bradley Riehl (400 hurdles), Jered Beasley (pole vault), Monroe (long jump), and Tylor Connelly (hammer) finished second in their events for Mt. SAC.

Third-place finishes for the Mounties included Collin Orlando (pole vault), Garren Haynes (long jump), and Terrence Sweetman (triple jump).

Of note, Mt. SAC pole vaulters Amata, Beasley, Orlando, Justin Beltran, and Jesus Arias occupied the top five spots in that event.
