
Walnut, Calif. – After a tough loss to Phoenix College to open the season, the Mt. San Antonio College Men's Soccer Team bounced back at the Nike/Azteca Soccer Tournament, earning a dominant 5-0 shutout win over Lake Tahoe on Friday, August 29, followed by a hard-fought 1-1 draw against West Valley on Sunday, August 31. The results secured the tournament title for the Mounties, who now sit at 1-1-1 overall.
GAME 1:
The Mounties came out firing in their tournament opener. Alexis Gomez struck first in the 15th minute, finishing a setup from Jon Jay Joseph. Just over ten minutes later, Rafael Avalos tallied his first goal of the season off an assist from Joseph Prado.
Julian Vazquez added a third in the 38th minute, capping off an impressive first half with help from Nathan Nunez.
The second half saw fewer chances until the 81st minute, when David Garcia made it 4-0 thanks to a well-placed assist from Erick Diaz. Avalos scored his second goal of the match in the 87th minute, again assisted by Joseph.
Goalkeeper Cody Lindeman recorded a clean sheet, making three saves to keep Lake Tahoe scoreless.
GAME 2:
In a tightly contested match on Sunday, Mt. SAC opened the scoring early in the second half when Christopher Chavez converted a pass from Samuel Bruno in the 54th minute.
West Valley responded just 13 minutes later, with Edan Bavelock assisting Devin Rosas on the equalizer to make it 1-1.
Lindeman played the entire 90 minutes, making five saves out of six shots on target, while West Valley's Romello Fulcher matched the effort with five saves of his own.
