Mt. SAC Football Captures Conference Title With 20-13 Win Over Fullerton

(Covina, CA) For the first time since the 2012 season, Mt. SAC has won the National Conference Central Division title outright with a, 20-13, win over visiting Fullerton on Saturday (Nov. 16).

With the win, the Mounties advance as one of four teams in the SoCal Football Play-Offs and will travel to take on number one seed Riverside City College, (10-0) this Saturday, November 23rd at 6:00 pm.

With their fourth win in the last five games, Mt. SAC finished the regular season with a 7-3 overall and 4-1 conference record.

The Mounties are currently ranked 11th in the state (JC Athletic Bureau Coaches) poll and tied for sixth in the So Cal (California Community College Football Coaches Assoc.) poll.

Mt. SAC secured the win on a critical third-down and nine situation (2:58 remaining) on the Mounties 37-yard line.  Quarterback Zach Rangel connected with running back Rachaad White (66 yds. on 24 carries, 4 catches, 49 yds.) on a 9-yard pass to earn the first down and keep the Mountie drive going.

Two runs of 10 and 17 yards by running back Dominique Redden (50 yds. on 7 carries, 2 catches, 32 yds.) to the Fullerton 27, put the Mounties into victory formation and an invitation to the So Cal playoffs for the first time since the 2014 season.

That season the Mounties went on to win their fourth CCCAA State Championship.

Leading the way for Mt. SAC was Rangel (25 for 38) with 207 yards and a touchdown.

Receiver Jonathan Schofield led all receivers with 107 yards on 14 receptions and a 14-yard score.

The defense held the Hornets to a net 62 yards on the ground and had a single interception by defensive lineman Inoke Katoa.

After trailing, 10-3, early in the second quarter, the Mounties reeled off 17 consecutive points on TD's by running back Malaki Thompson (2 yd. run) and Schofield (14 yds. catch) and one of two field goals by Gabriel Dunkle (26, 36 yds.) for the 20-10 lead.

Fullerton added a field goal and held the Mounties scoreless in the 4th quarter, but it wasn't enough to take the win away from the Mounties and their final homegame at Covina District Field.

The Mt. SAC Athletics Department wishes to thank the staff at Covina District Field for their support and hospitality during the past the 4 seasons.  Mt. SAC Football will return back home to new Hilmer Lodge Stadium next fall.
