Mt. SAC Football Falls to El Camino, 45-41 in National Division Central Conference Game

(Covina, CA) With a go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter, El Camino College defeated Mt. SAC 45-41 in a National Division Central Conference game Saturday night at Covina District Stadium.

With the loss, the Mounties fall to 4-3 overall and 0-2 in conference.

Mt. SAC started the fourth quarter with a 41-38 lead on the longest pass-play of the season, a 95-yard TD pass from Steven Nava to wide receiver Chris Jackson (5 catches, 123 yards).

With 13:58 left in the game, El Camino came right back with a 74 yard touchdown pass of its own for the final scoring play of the game for both teams.

The Mounties were led by running back Hykeem Massey with 20 carries for 162 yards and a touchdown and quarterback Steven Nava, who was 23 out of 36 for 302 yards and two TDs.

Receivers Jonathan Schofield (5 catches, 54 yards) and Damian Alloway (2 catches, 38 yards, TD) along with running back Asfunso Elam also led the Mounties offensively.

Nava and Malaki Thompson (3 carries, 11 yards) also had rushing TDs for the Mounties.

Defensively, linebacker Tauivi Ho Ching led the Mounties with 16 tackles (7 solo), while defensive backs Montez Evans and Ibrahim Konate had five solo tackles each.

Mt. SAC trailed at the half, 31-14 on touchdowns by Thompson (3-yard run) and Nava (1-yard run).

The Mounties climbed back to within 10 points, 31-21 early in the third quarter with a 48-yard fumble recovery by defensive back Jarell Sykes. That was followed by two more scores by Mt. SAC, a 31-yard pass-play from Nava to Alloway and a 68-yard run by Massey for the first lead of the game, 34-31 with 4:04 left in the quarter.

That lead lasted just over a minute, as El Camino scored on its next possession for the 38-34 lead. Each team exchanged TDs for the 45-41 final.

The Mounties host Cerritos College next Saturday, October 27 for a 6:00 pm.
