Mecate’s technical expertise and high-level experience have helped elevate the program to one of the top in California. In 2023, he was named Men's Wrestling Assistant Coach of the Year by the National Wrestling Coaches Association for his contributions to the Mountie program's success.

Before coming to Mt. SAC, Mecate spent two seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Old Dominion University (Norfolk, VA). While with the Monarchs, he helped guide 157-pounder Larry Early to NCAA Division I All-American honors and coached seven additional athletes to NCAA D1 Championship appearances.

A standout prep wrestler at Redlands East Valley High School (Redlands, CA), Mecate was the 2011 CIF State Champion at 135 lbs. and a three-time CIF State Medalist. He earned High School All-American recognition from Amateur Wrestling News and Wrestling USA Magazine, along with honorable mention honors from Asics and The California Wrestler. He concluded his high school career with a stellar 156-17 record.

Mecate went on to compete on a full athletic scholarship at Old Dominion University, where he distinguished himself as a two-time NCAA Division I All-American and a four-time national qualifier. He won two conference titles and amassed a 141-51 career record. In addition to his achievements on the mat, Mecate earned NCAA Academic All-American honors twice for his success in the classroom.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from Old Dominion University (2016).
