Assistant Coach Chris Mecate began his coaching career with Mountie Wrestling Program in 2019.  Prior to arriving at Mt. SAC, he served two seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Old Dominion University (Norfolk, VA).  During his coaching tenure with the Monarchs, he helped guide Larry Early (157 lbs.) to All-American status, as well as helping send seven other wrestlers to the NCAA D1 Championships.

Mecate prepped at Redlands East Valley High School (Redlands, CA) where he was the 2011 CIF State Champion at 135 lbs and a three-time CIF State Medalist.  He earned high school All-American honors from Amateur Wrestling News and Wrestling USA Magazine, as well as All-American Honorable Mention Honors from Asics and The California Wrestler.  He finished his high school career with an incredible record of 156 wins and only 17 losses. 

Earning a full-scholarship, Mecate continued his education and wrestling career at Old Dominion University.  As a Monarch, he was a two-time NCAA D1 All-American, captured two conference championships, qualified for four national championships and posted an overall collegiate career record of 141-51.  Mecate also excelled in the classroom and was twice named an NCAA Academic All-American. 

Mecate graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications (2016) from Old Dominion University.
