(Walnut, CA) Former Mountie Athletic Training Student Leilani Martinez was awarded the 2020 California Community College Athletic Trainers Association Athletic Training Student Scholarship recipient.  She was nominated by Mt. SAC Head Athletic Trainer Ali Lacayo and is one of 10 athletic training students, from throughout the state, to earn this prestigious honor.

Martinez, a student in the Azusa Pacific University Athletic Training Masters Program, served her clinical rotation with the Mt. SAC Athletics Program in the fall of 2019.  During her time at Mt. SAC, she worked with the basketball, football, pep squad, water polo and volleyball programs and under the supervision of Lacayo.

“Leilani is a hard-working professional who is attentive, receptive and has a great work ethic,” replied Mt. SAC Head Athletic Trainer, Ali Lacayo.  “Leilani gained the trust and respect of our student-athletes and built an impressive rapport with everyone at Mt. SAC.  She served as a great role model for the student-athletes she interacted with and invested her talents and her heart into Mt. SAC.  I look forward to seeing Leilani become a Certified Athletic Trainer and pursuing her career in Athletic Training.”

Martinez received her bachelor’s degree from Cal State Dominguez Hills (2018) and recently received her master’s degree from Azusa Pacific University in Athletic Training.  She will use the scholarship to help purchase supplies and pay the fees needed for her Board of Certification Exam in order pursue her dream of becoming a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC).

“This award came as a surprise…,” replied Martinez.  I’m really appreciative of the love and support I received from the Mt. SAC family.  I am especially grateful to Ali (Lacayo) for the nomination and taking the time to teach and mold me into a competent athletic trainer.  Her passion for the job has inspired me to become the best athletic trainer I can be and really advocate for the profession.”
