Former Mt. SAC Head Athletic Trainer to be Inducted into 3CATA

Andy was the longtime Head Athletic Trainer at Mount San Antonio College (Mt. SAC) for 35 years (1983-2018). During his tenure at Mt. SAC, Andy served and mentored countless Certified Athletic Trainers, working all over the state, as well as nationally and internationally.

(Walnut, CA) In light of the COVID-19 situation, the Mt. SAC Athletic Training Staff has devised an adjusted plan to care for Mt. SAC Student-Athletes during the mandated "stay at home order" period. The Mt. SAC Athletic Training Facilities are currently closed however, the staff realizes that many student-athletes continue to train and may require prevention and rehabilitation guidance. The athletic training staff is utilizing online communication resources for at home rehabilitation and/or management of injuries, as well as maintaining direct communication (e-mail) with student-athletes.

The staff is available remotely for current Mt. SAC Student-Athletes, Monday through Friday, during the hours of 8:30 am to 4:00 pm.

Samantha Hizon Awarded 2019 Stacy Sage Memorial Scholarship

(Walnut, CA) Mt. SAC Athletic Training Student Samantha Hizon was awarded the 2019 Stacy Sage Memorial Scholarship.  Hizon was awarded the scholarship at the 2019 Mt. SAC Scholarship Awards Ceremony which was held on June 9th, at the Sheraton Fairplex Conference Center in Pomona (CA).  

She was presented the scholarship by former Mt. SAC Head Athletic Trainer Andy Paulin.

The scholarship is honor of former Mt. SAC Student and Athletic Trainer Stacy Sage who passed away in 2013, after a courageous battle against cancer.  The  scholarship is awarded by her parents Steve and Carol Sage and is given annually to a Mt. SAC Athletic Training Student.

Former Head Athletic Trainer Andy Paulin Named 2019 NATA Preceptor of the Year

(Las Vegas, NV) Retired Mt. SAC Head Athletic Trainer and National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) Hall of Fame Member Andy Paulin adds another great honor to his prodigious resume, NATA Preceptor of the Year.  Paulin was presented the award at the 2019 NATA Convention during the Professional Education Committee Session on June 25th.

A Preceptor provides formal instruction and evaluation of clinical proficiencies in classroom, laboratory, and/or in clinical education experiences through direct supervision of athletic training students.

The NATA Preceptor of the Year Award recognizes those within the Athletic Training profession who serve as a preceptor for an Athletic Training Program.  The recipient is someone who goes above and beyond to help mentor students, and who work to improve the future of our profession by preparing the students of today, to become the professionals of tomorrow.

Bill Ito Named 2019 CCCAA Athletic Trainer of the Year

Bill Ito - CCCAA Athletic Trainer of the Year Image  (Sacramento, CA)  Mt. SAC Head Athletic Trainer Bill Ito has been named California Community College Athletics Association (CCCAA) Athletic Trainer of the Year.  The annual award is is presented by and voted upon by his peers in the California Community College Athletic Trainers Association.  

Since his arrival in January of 2008, Ito has served the Mt. SAC Student-Athletes, tending to their medical needs.  He currently serves the men's and women's Cross Country and Track & Field Programs, Men's and Women's Soccer Programs as well as the handling medical director duties for the world renown Mt. SAC Relays and Mt. SAC Cross Country Invitational.  Ito is an intregal part of the teams he handles medical duties for and is a big reason his teams have captured a whopping 14 CCCAA State Championships between them during his tenure.

Ito is considered by many to be one of the premier athletic trainers in the world.  He has served on 10 USA Track and Field (USATF) delegations, including 5 world championship teams and the 2016 US Olympic Track and Field Team.  He also serves as the Medical Director of the National Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nevada.  The Summit is the world's largest gathering of pole vaulters, pole vault coaches and fans with over 43,000 attendees, including many of the top pole vaulters in the world.

“Bill has a real respect and caring attitude to every single student-athlete regardless of their sport or ability,” replies Mt. SAC Director of Athletic Special Events, Doug Todd.  “He is a real professional, sought after expert in his field and caring individual.  This is a well derserved honor!"

Ito will receive his award and be recognized at the Honoring Our Own Luncheon, which will be held on March 28th, at the California Community College Athletic Association Annual Convention, in Concord (CA).

Stacy Sage/Art Mazmanian Scholarship Recognition Day

(Walnut, CA)The Mt. SAC Baseball Game on February 8th (2:00 pm), against Cypress College, will recognize and bring awareness to the Stacy Sage and Art Mazmanian Scholarships.

The scholarship honors the memory of former Mt. SAC Athletics Student Trainer Stacy Sage and brings awareness to Gall Bladder Cancer, which took her life at a young age.  February is Gall Bladder Cancer Awareness Month. 

Information regarding this tragic disease, the Stacy Sage Memorial Scholarship and the Art Mazmanian Scholarship will be distributed at the stadium entrance.

Legendary Hall of Fame Coach Art Mazmanian is expected to be in attendance as well as Steve and Carol Sage, the parents of Stacy.   

Each year both scholarships are presented at the college's annual scholarship awards ceremony.  This year's ceremony will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2019 at the Sheraton Fairplex Conference Center.

Ali Lacayo, Named Mt. SAC's Newest Full-Time Athletic Trainer

(Walnut, CA) The Mt. SAC Kinesiology, Athletics and Dance Division proudly announces that Alexandria Lacayo has been officially hired as Mt. SAC’s newest Athletic Trainer (07/17).  She becomes the third full-time trainer in the Mt. SAC Athletics Department and will oversee the medical wellbeing for student-athletes on the Men’s Basketball, Women’s Basketball, Women’s Beach Volleyball, Women’s Indoor Volleyball and Wrestling Teams

Mt. SAC Athletics Training Student, London Richmond, Accepted to the University of La Verne Training Program

(Walnut, CA) Former Mt. SAC Student London Richmond has been accepted to the  University of La Verne Athletic Training Program. As a Mountie, Richmond was very active with our athletics program, working with all of the Mt. SAC Certified Athletic Trainers, and with the Mt. SAC Student Government. Richmond was also and integral part of creating the Mt. SAC Sports Medicine Club.  He will join former classmate Sheila Monteagudo at the University of La Verne.

(Walnut, CA) Sheila has been accepted into the University of La Verne, Athletic Training Program.  Monteagudo has been an active participant in the Mt. SAC Athletic Training program since 2015.  She was also the first president of the Mt.SAC 

Mt. San Antonio College Athletic Trainers and Students Participate in inaugural Community College Athletic Training Student Retreat

(Palm Springs, CA) Mt. San Antonio College Athletic Training Students
 participated in a two day retreat with other community college athletic training students and athletic trainers.  Mt. SAC's, Mike Landas along with head athletic trainers, Bill Ito and Andy Paulin were presenters at the inaugural event.  Students participated in various lectures/presentations in Emerging Practices, Professionalism, Trends, Social Media, Resumes, Interview Skills, Gaining from your experience as a student, Ed Plans for Transfer Readiness, Work - Life Balance, Tape Races, Evaluation Techniques, and much more.

 

      

Stacy Sage Memorial Scholarship First Recipient, Joshua Gray

(Walnut, CA) Joshua Gray was the first recipient of the Stacy Sage Memorial Scholarship. The award was presented at the annual Mt.SAC Scholarship Awards Ceremony. The scholarship is in memory of Stacy Sage, a former Mt.SAC athletic trainer who passed away at a very early age. Stacys’ parents, Steve and Carol Sage, created the scholarship to honor Stacys’ memory and also her passion for athletic training.

 


   

Mt. SAC Baseball Team Salute to Veterans!

Lonnell Edwards was one of several Military Veterans honored at the Annual Mt. SAC Baseball Salute to the Veterans on April 23, 2016.

Lonnell served with the United States Army and is now studying at Mt. SAC to be an Athletic Trainer.


Mt. San Antonio College Athletic Training Students Compete at the Bailey-Arnheim Games

Mt. San Antonio College Athletic Training Students competed with University Athletic Training students at the Bailey-Arnheim Games conducted on the campus of Cal. State University, Long Beach on Sunday April 10, 2016.  Events included a Taping Relay, "Quiz Bowl", and Spineboarding drills.


Daniela Medina Named Inspirational Woman of Mt. SAC

 

Former Mt.SAC student and current Mt.SAC Hourly ATC, Daniela Medina, was recently recognized as one of four Inspirational Women of Mt.SAC.

Medina graduated from Mt. SAC, received her Bachelor's Degree at Cal State Fullerton
and her Masters Degree in Athletic Training from Cal Baptist University.  She passed the
athletic training certification test on her first attempt and now works at a local high school
and is an hourly trainer here at Mt. SAC.  Medina also serves our nation as a member of the
Army Reserve, which she has been a part since her time at Mt. SAC. 


Mt. SAC Head Athletic Trainer, Bill Ito, Named to 2016 U.S. Olympic Track & Field Medical Staff

       

(Indianapolis, IN)  Mt. SAC Athletic Trainer, Bill Ito was officially named to the 2016 US Olympic Track and Field Staff.  Ito is considered by many to be one of the premier athletic trainers in the world.  He has previously served on nine other USA Track and Field (USATF) National Team Delegations, including two World Championship Teams and three World Junior Championship Teams.  This month he will also serve as an Athletic Trainer for the US Team at the 2016 World Indoor Championships, which will be held from March 17th to 20th in Portland, Oregon.

Ito has also served USA Track and Field as the Medical Director of the National Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nevada.  The Summit is the largest gathering of pole vaulters, pole vault coaches and fans with over 3,000 attendees, including many of the top pole vaulters in the world. 

“Bill is big reason why many of the world’s top vaulters attend the Summit,” replies USATF High Performance and Development, Men’s and Women’s National Pole Vault Chair, Brian Yokoyama.  “He is respected and admired amongst elite athletes throughout the world.  His cutting edge techniques and knowledge has helped many of our elite vaulters with their medical issues which has allowed them to recover faster.”

The Track and Field Events of the 2016 Rio De Janeiro (Brazil) Olympic Games will be held from August 12th through the 21st.
