Former Mountie Gridiron Star Alfonso Boone Elected to CCCAA Hall of Fame Class of 2021

(Walnut, CA) Former Mountie Gridiron Star Alfonso Boone has been elected to the 2021 California Community College Athletics Association (CCCAA) Hall of Fame Class.  A former defensive tackle, he played 10 seasons in the NFL with the Detriot Lions, Chicago Bears, Kansas City Chiefs and San Diego Chargers before retiring in 2010.  An incredible fact about Boone is that he is one of the few players ever, if any, to be drafted directly into the NFL straight out of a community college.

Boone attended high school in Michigan at Arthur Hill High School (Saginaw) where he was an outstanding football and ice hockey player.  He continued his education at Central State University (Wiberforce, OH), where he played ice hockey.  After ending his ice hockey career and because his university dropped football, he sat out two years prior to transferring to Mt. SAC, in the Fall of 1998.

During his two seasons (1998, 1999) at Mt. SAC, Boone dominated the line, earning all-conference and J.C. Gridwire All-American Honors.  With his NCAA athletic eligibility clock starting in 1995, his 5-year eligibility window had expired by the time he finished at Mt. SAC.  Without the ability to transfer to another institution to continue playing football, Boone made himself eligible for the 2000 NFL Draft.

Boone was selected by the Detroit Lions, in the seventh round (253 overall pick) of the draft.  For the 2000 season he was a member of the Lion's practice squad before being traded to the Chicago Bears where he remained for the majority of his career.  In Chicago, he appeared in 83 games, recording 135 tackles and 10.5 sacks.  In 2006, he helped lead the Bears to a 12-4 record and Super Bowl appearance.

Boone becomes the 11th individual affiliated with Mt. SAC Athletics to be inducted into the CCCAA Hall of Fame.  He joins fellow Mounties Zelda Bolden, Mark Crear, Fred Claire, Hilmer Lodge, Max Montoya, Antonio Pierce, Evans Roderick, Bob Seagren, Don Ruh and Don Warren.

An extremely humble and appreciative individual, Boone continues to give back to his community, the college and Mt. SAC Football Program.

Due to the CoVID situation, Boone, along with the other four members of the 2021 Hall of Fame Class, will be inducted along with the 2020 and 2022 classes at the 2022 CCCAA Annual Convention that is scheduled to held in April (5th-8th) at the DoubleTree by Hilton Ontario Airport Hotel, in Ontario (CA).
