Walnut, Calif. – The Mt. SAC Athletics Department reached a historic milestone on Sunday, November 23, earning its 100th California Community College Athletic Association (3C2A) State Championship title after the Men’s Wrestling Team defeated Fresno City College to claim the 2025 State Dual Championship.
This marks Mt. SAC’s second state title of the 2025-2026 season so far, coming just one day after the Women’s Cross Country Team earned their own state championship on November 22.
The 2024–2025 season was one of the most successful in Mt. SAC history, with the Mounties bringing home six state championships: Women’s Golf, which earned its first title in 19 years; Men’s Wrestling, which brought home both the Dual and Individual championships; Women’s Basketball, which secured its ninth program title and fifth under Head Coach Brian Crichlow; Women’s Swimming and Diving, which claimed its first-ever state championship; and Baseball, which won its first title in 60 years.
These remarkable performances also earned Mt. SAC the Learfield Directors’ Cup, recognizing the college as the top Two-Year College Athletics Program in the nation for the second time in school history.
Since 2000, Mt. SAC teams have captured an impressive 73 of the college’s 100 state championships. The Mounties have also secured at least one 3C2A state title every year since 1995 (excluding the COVID-postponed 2020 season), totaling 30 consecutive years of championship success.
The program’s first-ever state title dates back to 1957, when Head Coach Hilmer Lodge led the Men’s Track and Field Team to victory. Today, Men’s and Women’s Track and Field lead all programs with 15 state titles each, followed closely by Women’s Cross Country with 13.
Mt. SAC’s coaching legacy is equally noteworthy. Retired Head Coach Doug Todd, who led Men’s and Women’s Track and Field and Women’s Cross Country, remains the winningest coach in college history with 13 state titles earned between 1995 and 2017.
Men’s and Women’s Wrestling Head Coach David Rivera follows with nine state championships, while Cross Country and Track and Field coach Giovanni Lanaro has contributed seven titles to the program’s total.
While state titles stand as a powerful testament to the excellence of Mt. SAC’s athletics programs, the college takes equal pride in the culture behind the victories. The dedication and longevity of coaches and staff, the positive experiences shared by returning student-athletes, and the strong sense of family that permeates every program all contribute to a foundation of success that extends far beyond competition.
As Mt. SAC celebrates its 100th state championship, the department remains committed to providing student-athletes with the best facilities, resources, coaching and support. With deep pride in its past and optimism for the future, Mt. SAC looks forward to the many accomplishments still to come.
