Mt. SAC proudly supports over 800 student-athletes who engage in practices, training, and competition each year. Our college is renowned for its athletic excellence, and we take pride in living up to our slogan of being the place “where champions compete.”
Among the exceptional talent at our institution, the department has selected four outstanding individuals as Mt. SAC Athletes of the Year for the 2023-2024 school year. We are pleased to honor both a man and a woman from the fall and spring seasons.
Congratulations to Football player Nicholas Floyd, Women’s Basketball player Daisia Michell, Men’s Swimming and Diving standout Samuel Slezak, and Women’s Track and Field star Summer Stevenson on their remarkable achievements and contributions to Mt. SAC Athletics.
Nicholas Floyd, a sophomore running back, was named Offensive Player of the Year for the Southern California Football Association National Division, Central League. His season included 1,265 rushing yards, 85 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns, significantly contributing to the team’s success. Floyd’s outstanding performance earned him All-California First Team Offense and 2023 All-America First Team Offense. He secured a scholarship to Utah State University, where he is continuing his football career.
Daisia Mitchell, a freshman guard and forward on the Mt. SAC Women’s Basketball Team, was instrumental to the team’s victories. Wearing jersey #24, she averaged 18.3 points per game with a 49% shooting accuracy from the field, 30% from beyond the arc, and 63% from the free-throw line. She contributed 9.5 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game. Mitchell showcased her consistency by scoring double figures in 23 out of 25 games, recording 12 double-digit rebound games, and accounting for 25% of the team’s total points. Her accomplishments include being named South Coast Conference North Player of the Year, SoCal Player of the Year, and Women’s Basketball Coaches Association 1st Team All-American. She also earned spots on the All-Tournament teams at the Mt. SAC Tip-Off, COS Tournament and LAVC Tournament.
Samuel Slezak, a sophomore on the Men’s Swimming and Diving Team, distinguished himself with outstanding performances throughout the season. He is the State Champion in the 1650 freestyle, achieving the top time in the country. Slezak also earned South Coast Conference Swimmer of the Year and South Coast Conference Champion in the 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle and 1650 freestyle. He set new school records in the 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 1000 freestyle and 1650 freestyle. Slezak was named All-American in three individual events and four relays, all while maintaining an impressive 3.8 GPA.
Summer Stevenson, a sophomore in Women’s Track and Field, delivered exceptional performances throughout the season. She was a key member of the Track and Field State Championship Team, SoCal Regional Championship Team, and the South Coast Conference Championship Team. Individually, Stevenson won the State Championship in the triple jump, was the State Runner-Up in the long jump, and secured titles as SoCal Regional Champion in both the triple jump and long jump. She is also the new school record holder in the women’s triple jump with a leap of 12.79 meters.
These athletes have set high standards of excellence and embody the spirit of Mt. SAC Athletics. Their achievements reflect their hard work, determination, and commitment to their sports.
