Mt. SAC Athletics Captures 8th Daktronics Cup Championship

XIII Daktronics Cup Title Graphic

(Westlake, OH) For the eighth time, Mt. SAC Athletics has captured the prestigious Daktronics Cup State Association Championship as the premier community college athletics program among California, Oregon and Washington community colleges.  Formerly known as the National Alliance of Two-Year Collegiate Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA) Cup, Mt. SAC has dominated this division, winning nearly half of all titles, since its inception during the 2003-2004 season.

Even with a Covid-19 shortened season, Mt. SAC scored 114 points with their fall sports, beating out Sierra College with 103.5 points and Fresno City College with 86.5 points.  Scoring points for the Mounties were Men’s Soccer (19), Men’s Cross Country (18), Women’s Cross Country (18), Men’s Wrestling (15), Men’s Football (14.5), Women’s Golf (11.5), Men’s Water Polo (9.5) and Women’s Soccer (8.5).

Had the season continued, the Mounties were still in excellent position for this title and their 10th California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA)/NATYCAA Cup title.  Although the California Title was not recognized by the CCCAA this season, Mt. SAC remains the premier program in California for the tenth consecutive year.  When the fall and spring seasons were cancelled, the women’s basketball team was in the state championship playoffs, the men’s track & field team (based on marks up to that point) were far ahead of any other program, the women’s softball team had a better record (up to that point in the season) than their previous state championship season and all other sports (men’s golf, men’s swimming/diving, women’s swimming/diving and women’s track & field) were headed towards scoring valuable Daktronics Cup points.

Mt. SAC also took home another national honor with Mt. SAC Director of Athletics Joe Jennum awarded the 2019-2020 National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Community College Athletics Director of the Year (CLICK HERE to view article).

Along with the eight Daktronics Cup titles and nine CCCAA/NATYCAA Cup Championships, the Mounties have placed in the top 2, an incredible 15 out of the 17 seasons.  For the past eleven years, Mt. SAC has either captured the championship or taken second.  The Mounties also claim six of the top 10 scores in Daktronics Cup history and is the only California institution to have back to back titles.
