(Sacramento, CA) The Mt. SAC Athletics Program was named the 2017-2018 California Community College Athletics Association (CCCAA) / National Association of Two Year Administrators of Athletics (NATYCAA) Champion for an unprecedented eighth time. The award is presented annually to the states' premier overall athletics program based on state championship finishes in each institutions 5 best men’s and 5 women’s sports.
This was the sixth consecutive title for the Mounties who scored 175 points, 21.5 points over runner-up and Northern California powerhouse, Sierra College who scored 153.5 points. The margin of victory is the second highest margin of victory (record = Mt. SAC, 26 points, 2014-2015) in the 15 year history of the NATYCAA Cup.
This season, the Mounties captured five state championships in Men’s Cross Country, Women’s Cross Country, Men’s Track & Field, Women’s Track & Field and Softball which garnered 100 points (20 points per championship). The Men’s Wrestling Program earned 19 points for their state runner-up finish. Teams contributing to the Mounties NATYCAA Cup point total included Men’s Soccer (17.5 pts.), Baseball (17 pts.) Women’s Swimming (13 pts.) and a split of 8.5 points between the Women’s Water Polo and Women’s Basketball Team.
Since its inception (2003-04 season), Mt. SAC Athletics has dominated the CCCAA/NATYCAA Cup Championship. The Mounties have captured eight championships and have placed in the top 2, an incredible, 13 out of 15 seasons. For the past ten years, Mt. SAC has either captured the championship or taken second. Mt. SAC also claims six of the top 10 scores in NATYCAA Cup History.
