(Walnut, CA) Mountie Softball Head Coach, Ruby Rojas has been named the 2017 South Coast Conference (SCC) All-Sports Women's Coach of the Year. The annual award is presented to the SCC's outstanding men's and women's head coach, in the given academic year. The honor is voted upon by the SCC Athletics Directors at their annual meeting.
In her fifth season, Rojas guided the Mounties to the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) State Championship title game. The Mounties finished undefeated in SCC play (12-0 record) and Rojas repeated as the SCC Softball Coach of the Year.
“I’m really honored to receive this award,” replied Rojas, a member of the 2008 Venezuelan Olympic Team. “I’m blessed and grateful to have the opportunity to coach some pretty remarkable young ladies.”
This marked the third consecutive year that the honor was bestowed upon a Mt. SAC Coach.
Mt. SAC Track & Field/Cross Country Head Coach Ron Kamaka received the honor on the men's side in 2015. He repeated the honor in 2016, along with Mt. SAC Women's Basketball Head Coach, Brian Crichlow who received the honor on the women's side.
Mt. SAC Coaches have won the award, 12 of the last 14 years. Rojas is the second Mt. SAC Softball Coach to receive this prestigious honor. Former Mountie Head Coach Kelly Ford captured the award for the 2005 and 2007 seasons.
In her five years as head coach, Rojas has led the Mounties to three conference titles.
Perhaps her biggest accomplishment this past season was off the field. All 14 of her graduating sophomores matriculated on to four-year universities, including two National Fastpitch Coaches Association Academic All-Americans.
“My goal will always be to help them transition into the next level,” replied Rojas. “That is what I love to do and that to me is winning.”
