Mounties Hit the Mat Strong, Earning Second Place in Season Debut

Norwalk, Calif. – The Mt. SAC Women's Wrestling Team opened their season with bang, placing second out of 19 teams at the 4th Annual Cerritos College Women's Open on Saturday, February 7. The Mounties finished the day with 112 points, trailing only Menlo College, which captured first place with 188 points. Conference rival Cerritos College rounded out the top three with 93 points.

Sienna Montanez delivered a standout performance on the mat in the 103 pound weight class, earning a second-place finish. Montanez picked up wins over Linda Mora (San Joaquin Delta), Marisa Alvarez (Cerritos), and Aalyah Cordero (ELAC) before falling in the championship bout to Menlo's Navjot Waralch.

At 110 pounds, Caylee Reyes placed sixth overall after earning victories against Audrey Swiderek of Menlo College and Celia Esquivel from Bakersfield College, contributing valuable points to the Mounties' team total.

Mt. SAC had a strong presence in the 131 pound weight class. Bella Llamas battled her way to a second-place finish with wins over Aubree Koreen (Cuesta), Isabel Navarro (Menlo), and Arthziri Guizar (ELAC), before dropping the final match to unattached wrestler Lastevia Muir.

Also competing at 131, Zitlali Sarmiento finished fourth overall after an impressive run that included wins over Jayleen Garrett (unattached), Cuesta's Aubree Koreen, Hope International's Kayla Pablo, Palomar's Alyssa Equiha, and ELAC's Arthziri Guizar. Sarmiento fell in the medal round to Menlo's Isabel Navarro, who secured third place.

Gen Deleon added another podium finish for the Mounties in the 180 pound division, earning third place overall. Deleon picked up wins over Natalie Gonzales (Westcliff University), Jordan Puluti (Cerritos), Felizai Solomua (Cerritos) and unattached competitor Wyvonnie Fletcher to cap off a hard day's work.

Mt. SAC will head out of state for its next competition, traveling to Arizona Christian University to compete in the Firestorm Open on Friday, February 13. Keep up the good work, Mounties!
