Walnut, Calif. – In a close match, the Mt. San Antonio College Women's Wrestling Team came out on top with a narrow 22-21 victory over Cerritos College on Wednesday, March 26.

The competition started strong for the Mounties when Jenelle Gozun took down Oceanna Yeung in the 103-pound weight class, winning by technical fall 12-2 in 3:15, giving Mt. SAC an early 4-1 lead.  However, the Falcons quickly answered in the 110-pound match as Megan Sognefest defeated Anika Del Castillo with a 10-0 technical fall in 3:43, taking a 5-1 lead.

Mt. SAC got back on top in the 117-pound round, where Mackenzie Muniz overpowered Vivian Nguyen with a 10-0 technical fall in just 2:15. The momentum continued for the Mounties in the 124-pound weight class, as Leilani Lazaro defeated Denise Figueroa with another 10-0 technical fall in 2:39, extending their lead to 12-5.

In the 131-pound match, Zitlali Sarmiento won a hard-fought 7-6 decision over Rontaysia Payne, keeping the lead for Mt. SAC at 15-6. Tehya Ledesma then earned a solid 10-3 decision over Jaylene Martinez in the 138-pound class followed by Alexis Jimenez defeating Casey Otero 7-2 in the 145-pound match, bringing the team score to 21-8.

However, Cerritos fought back in the upper weights. Vida Beckel pinned Nyomi Mesa in 1:29 at 160 pounds, and Kinsey Konrad followed with a pin of Andrea Vidrio Majano in 4:17 at 180 pounds, tightening the score at 21-18, with Mt. SAC maintaining a narrow lead.

With one weight class to go and the match on the line, Raven Ross was awarded a win for the Falcons with a 4-1 decision over Brianna Macias. Despite Cerritos' efforts in the final bouts, Mt. SAC held on to their earlier lead, securing the victory by a slim margin with a final score of 22-21.
