(Norwalk, CA) The Mt. SAC's Women's Wrestling team opened their season on Saturday (January 29th) at the Cerritos College Open with four women competing. All four wrestlers were able to win at least one match and two of them made the podium.
Sofia Vergara placed second in the 136-weight class while Elizabeth Carrillo placed second in the 143-weight class. Bridget Oregel and Lety Sanchez placed fourth in the 143 and 136 weight classes, respectively.
Vergara won the quarterfinal by tech fall over Anastasia Tolentino of Palomar College. She would defeat Kylee Wohlwend (Vanguard University) by injury default (Inj. 1:33) in the semi-finals. In the championship match, Vergara would fall to Piper Hall (Vanguard University) by decision (Dec 20-11).
Carrillo took care of business with wins over Daniela Romo of Menlo College (Dec 8-6) and by fall (F 3:32)) over Mariz Soliman (Vanguard University). She advanced to the championship match where she lost by tech fall (TF 10-0) to Desiree Jones of Menlo College.
Overall, it was a very successful tournament for the Mt. SAC Women's Wrestling Team finished in 5th place. Congratulations to all the wrestlers!
The next competition will be a dual match on Wednesday, February 8 at East Los Angeles College.
