Mounties defeat Rio Hondo, 19-2, in SCC action as 10 players score; Annual Mt. SAC Classic starts Friday

(Walnut, CA) The Mt. SAC Women's Water Polo team opened South Coast Conference action with an overwhelming victory over visiting Rio Hondo, 19-2, Wednesday (September 22).

Ten players scored for the Mounties, with sophomore Madeline Gaitan leading the way with three goals. Seven other players had a pair of goals.

Mt. SAC improved to 3-6 overall.

"It's a good group of girls that work really hard and they are a fun group and hoping it all starts to click," Mt. SAC Women's Water Polo coach Chris Jackson said. "We got to get deep into our bench (Wednesday), which is always nice.

"This weekend we will see some good teams again and we'll get a chance to see where we sit."

Jackson was referring to the eight-team Mt. SAC Water Polo Classic on Friday and Saturday, September 24, 25 at the Marie T. Mills Aquatics center.

The Mounties scored the first eight goals of the game and led, 12-0 at the half against the Roadrunners.

Zen Allen and Julia Bensing-Ruiz led the way in the first period with two goals each.

The Mounties added seven more goals in the second half and the goal-keeping the duo of Kelly Jackson (4 saves) and Jahanna Palmer (4 saves) held the Roadrunners to only one goal in each half.

"We've had a lot of tournaments where we have played tough teams, but so far in conference we have been doing pretty well," Bensing-Ruiz said. "We have a tournament this weekend playing some of the best teams up north and we're looking to have a lot of improvements."

"I've been playing for 12 years now and this is the first time I ever took a break from Polo," said Bensing-Ruiz, of the year away from competition because of the pandemic. "Coming back was really hard and adjusting to things that I was able to do and now I can't do, just because it's been so long.

"We're in a good spot right now and we're all pretty proud and happy, especially since we've all been off for a year."

Bensing-Ruiz taught swim lessons and in between lessons she got a few laps in. "During swim season I got a few more laps in," she added.

Mt. SAC will begin the Classic on Friday with two games against Santa Monica and Santa Barbara City College.
