Mt. SAC Women Water Polo Wins Two, Loses Two at Long Beach City's, Battle at the Beach

(Long Beach, CA) With the season winding down, the Mt. SAC Women's Water Polo Team won a pair of games and dropped two games at the Battle of the Beach Tournament, hosted by Long Beach City College Friday and Saturday (Oct. 25, 26).

The Mounties (9-9) defeated Pasadena City College, 10-9 and San Diego Mesa, 9-6 and lost to Palomar, 9-7, and Diablo Valley, 15-5.

Sophomore attacker Amber Bustamante led the Mounties with eight goals (3 games), followed by Julia Bensing-Ruiz with six (three games) and Bella Robledo and Brianna Baker had four each (three games).

Bensing-Ruiz and Baker each recorded five steals (two games).

The Mounties opened the annual LBCC tourney by dropping their first game, 9-7, to Palomar. Three Mt. SAC players all scored two goals each - Bensing-Ruiz, Bustamante and Baker.

In the afternoon game at Fullerton College, Mt. SAC defeated San Diego Mesa in a closely contested game, 9-6. Bustamante had a game-high four goals and two steals, while Baker added three goals.

The Mounties took a 3-1 lead in the first period and held the lead, 5-4 at the half. Bustamante and Robledo scored two each in the half for Mt. SAC. The Mounties then extended their lead to four goals, 8-4, in the first 2:30 of the third period and held a 9-5 lead heading into the final period, coming out with the victory.

On Saturday (Oct. 26), in the first of two games at Fullerton, the Mounties lost to Northern California's Diablo Valley College, 15-5, but came back to finish the tourney with a 10-9 win over conference foe, PCC.

Bustamante led the charge with four goals and Baker added two scores.

After a comfortable, 6-2 halftime lead, the Lancers outscored Mt. SAC, 3-2 in the third period to trail, 8-5 entering the final period.

Bustamante scored an unassisted goal just 16 seconds into the fourth period to give the Mounties, what appeared to be a comfortable 9-5 lead.

PCC came roaring back as the Lancers' Fernanda Alvarez scored three goals in just over three minutes, to trail 9-8 with 3:38 remaining.

Each team traded goals in the final two minutes and the Mounties escaped with the win.

The Mounties play their final regular season South Coast Conference game Wednesday (Oct. 30) at Chaffey.

The conference playoffs get underway Thursday (Nov. 7) at PCC.
