Mt. SAC Women Water Polo Team Sweeps Two Games in American River Tourney

(SACRAMENTO) By John M. Sherrard – After a tough first two games in the American River College Tournament in Sacramento on Thursday, the Mt. San Antonio College Women's Water Polo team turned its fortunes around and outscored both opponents, 20-6, for two victories on Friday.

In the early game the Mounties defeated Las Positas, 9-1, and came back in the afternoon with an 11-5 win over Santa Rosa College to raise their record to 3-2 overall.

In their win over Las Positas, a well-balanced scoring attack saw eight players score a goal, including two goals by freshman 2-meter specialist Kayla De Herrera(Bonita HS). The Mounties built up a 7-0 lead early in the fourth period before the Bear Cubs would score their first goal of the game.

Leading Mt. SAC defensively with four steals was sophomore attacker Elizabeth Keane (Corona HS), followed by freshmen Alexis Aguirre (Rowland HS) and Clare Rowland (St. Lucy's HS) with three each.

For the second win in a row balanced scoring was again the name of the game for the Mounties with eight players in the scoring column.

Keane led the charge with three goals, including two assists and three steals. Freshman attacker Ridlee Dunlap (Esperanza HS), added three steals, a goal and an assist.

Holding a 4-1 lead after one period of play, freshman attacker Sarah Scotvold (La Serna HS) and Keane each had a goal in the second, to help give the Mounties a 6-3 lead at the half.

The Mounties matched Santa Rosa with two goals each in the third for the 8-5 advantage and in the final period, three players, Marina Valenzuela, Keane and freshman attacker Janeane Chagolla (Rowland HS) scored and the defense held Santa Rosa scoreless for the 11-5 final.

The Mountie women will host Rio Hondo College in a South Coast Conference game on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. at the swim complex on campus.
