Mounties Open Conference Play with Commanding 3-0 Sweep Over Rio Hondo

Whittier, Calif. – The Mt. SAC Women's Volleyball Team kicked off conference play in dominant fashion, sweeping Rio Hondo College 3-0 on Wednesday, October 1. With the win, the Mounties improve to 10-5 on the season, while the Roadrunners fall to 4-9.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The opening set proved to be the most competitive of the match, going into extra points before Mt. SAC edged out a 27-25 victory. The Mounties tallied 15 kills with a .343 hitting percentage in the set, outpacing Rio Hondo's 10 kills and .219 efficiency.

Mt. SAC continued to build momentum, taking the second set 25-16 with a .292 hitting percentage and closing out the sweep with a convincing 25-15 third set, highlighted by an impressive .381 hitting clip.

With the Mounties firmly in control, Head Coach Samantha Neely utilized the full roster. Notably absent from the court was starting outside hitter Emma Carson, still recovering from injury.

Yaretzi Silva and Sydney Valentine paced the offense with 10 kills apiece. Setters Morgan Wilson (22 assists) and Isabella Ross (15 assists) directed a balanced attack, while Mayah Tiscareno anchored the defense with 14 digs. Veronica Estrada added 4 digs to keep the Roadrunners in check.

Bella Fairley made the most of her opportunities, scoring 2 kills on 3 attempts for a .667 hitting percentage. Brittney Okorie was a standout at the net with 3 kills and 4 block assists, while Tatum Hardway contributed 2 kills (.667) and 2 block assists. Eva Fisher and Kayla Staveley added 4 and 5 kills, respectively, with Fisher also recording 5 digs and a block.

Statistically, Mt. SAC outperformed Rio Hondo across the board:

  • Assists: Mt. SAC 38 | Rio Hondo 22
  • Service Aces: Mt. SAC 8 | Rio Hondo 3
  • Digs: Mt. SAC 40 | Rio Hondo 32
  • Total Blocks: Mt. SAC12 | Rio Hondo 6

While the Mounties did register 10 errors on both kills and serves, as well as four on serve receive, their overall performance left little doubt about the outcome.

NEXT UP:

The Mounties return to action at home on Friday, October 3, for another conference matchup against East Los Angeles College (1-12). First serve is set for 6:00 PM.
