(Walnut, CA) With a 3-0 sweep of the visiting East Los Angeles Huskies, the Mt. SAC Women's Volleyball team clinched at least a share of the South Coast Conference title on Wednesday (November 9).

Mt. SAC can clinch the outright championship with a win over Long Beach City College this Friday (Nov. 11) at Mt. SAC on sophomore night.

The Mounties, who are 18-4 overall and 10-1 in the conference, won 25-22, 25-19, 26-16.

Mt. SAC, currently ranked 11th in the state, was led by sophomore outside hitters Allison Whiteman (2 Digs, .300 K%) and JJ Quarrels (6 Digs, 1 Service Ace, .368 K%) with nine kills each. Sophomore Angelina Burton added seven kills.

"It was a really fun game to play," Quarrels said. "The second string came in and they were on fire. It secured us first place in the conference for the first time (in a while). It's exciting.

"Coming up short last year (loss to PCC), to now taking it over, it's the best feeling ever."

Leading the way with a team-high 21 assists was sophomore setter Kylie Rhodes (6 Digs, 1 SA), while Capri Salmon (6 D, 1 SA, 1 K) added 10 assists.

Sophomore libero Riannel Arevalo (3 SA, 2 A) led with 10 digs and Savanna Corrales (4 K, 2 SA) added seven digs.

Second-year head Women's Volleyball Coach Samantha Neely knows how important the conference title is this year after a tough loss to PCC last year.

"It means a lot to us, and this was an opportunity to make history," Neely said. "The program last won the North Division back in 2016, which is when (Assistant coach Quinonez) Lauren played on the team."

Quinonez, an opposite and middle blocker, played for the Mounties in 2016-17 and was part of the undefeated 8-0 North Division winners.

"We've never won a conference championship with the whole conference combined," Neely added. "It is a little extra special being that we're in the gym for the last year and the last couple of games (playoffs). Bringing the championship home to the old gym and taking it into the new gym is something that is really special."
