Mounties Volleyball defeat LBCC, 3-1, in SCC match

(Long, Beach, CA) The Mt. SAC Women's Volleyball team, in the middle of their best season since 2016, continued the winning ways with a 3-1 win over host Long Beach City College Friday (October 29) in a South Coast Conference match.

The Mounties, who won 25-17, 19-25, 26-24, 25-18, improved to 16-5 overall and 10-3 in the conference.

"It took us a little bit to find our footing, but once we did, the team took off," Mt. SAC Women's Volleyball coach Samantha Neely said. "Long Beach came to play and the hustle on their side forced us to step up our effort on our side."

Neely was referring to the third-set comeback by the Mounties.

Mt. SAC took the opening set, while LBCC (10-8, 8-5) evened it up with a second-set victory.

However, the Mounties faced a third-set, six-point deficit and turned the match in their favor with a big comeback.

"The true test for our team was in the third set," Neely added. "We were tied a set apiece and down, 16-22. At that point, there was a situation to make – give in or fight even harder, and I'm proud to say that the latter occurred.

"We never like to be in a situation where we are playing catch-up, but I was really proud of the way our team battled from behind to take the third set. We carried that momentum into the fourth set to finish the match strong."

In that third set, trailing 22-16, the Mounties went on a 10-2 to put the match away.

Riley DeGroot (13 Digs, 1 Service Ace) led the team with 17 kills (.429 K %). With 14 kills was Allison Whiteman (11 D), along with 11 kills from JJ Quarrels (12 D).

Libero Riannel Arevalo led the team with 23 digs.

Setter Ally Euston (10 D), with the fifth time of 40 or more assists in a match, had 41 in the match against LBCC for the Mounties.

As a team, the Mounties had a season-high 71 digs.
