Women's Volleyball Snaps Losing Streak, Wins Twice in Mt. SAC Invite

(Walnut, CA) A seven-match losing streak came to end in the Annual Mt. SAC Invitational, as the Mounties defeated both Imperial Valley and Citrus in four sets Saturday (Sept. 28). Sandwiched in between the two wins was a four-set loss to College of the Desert.

With the longest losing streak in 15 years behind them, the Mounties played three, four-set matches en route to the two victories.

"The squad played really great (Saturday)," Mt. SAC fourth-year Volleyball Coach Ali Carey-Oliver said. "I'm so proud of how they battled through three, four-set matches. They grew as a team and really gave the crowd something to cheer for."

The Mounties (3-9) opened up with their first of two four-set wins with a 25-18, 21-25, 25-21, 27-25 decision over Imperial Valley College. The win, which ended the seven-match losing streak by the Mounties, was led by Juliana Gomez and Jessica Morse with 16 and 12 kills, respectively. Janderi Ceja had a match-high 23 assists and Azriel White added 18.

Jocelyn Portillo and Ashley Velazquez led with 16 and 11 digs, respectively.

College of the Desert handed the Mounties their only loss of the Invite with a four-set 25-23, 25-15, 17-25, 25-21 win. Morse and Macy Barnes led the Mounties with 12 and 10 kills, respectively, while Ceja added 26 assists.

In the evening and final match of the day, Mt. SAC defeated Citrus College, 25-16, 19-25, 28-26, 25-14. Camille Boone had 10 kills to lead the team, while Ceja led the team for the third match with 21 assists and Barnes added 12 digs.

"Al-Juraishi also served the final Ace of the match to put the exclamation mark on a well-earned 'W'," Carey-Oliver added.

Coach Carey-Oliver's player highlights: Aya Al-Juraishi and Boone were blocking machines (Saturday), Gomez and Morse performed offensively all day and Barnes was incredible on all sides of the ball. Portillo and Velazquez played stellar defense and setters Ceja and White dished out the ball well. They spread the offense and found ways to get all of their hitters involved.
