Mt. SAC Women’s Volleyball Plays State #6 Moorpark Tough in Loss

Mt. SAC Woman's Volleyball

(Walnut, CA) The Mt. SAC Women's Volleyball Team played a tough and close 3 sets, but were swept (3-0) by CCCAA State #6 ranked Moorpark College.

The Mounties gave the Raiders a run for their money in the 25-21, 25-14, 25-23 match.

"Unfortunately, we couldn't get our offense going with everyone else and Moorpark capitalized on that," replied Mt. SAC Volleyball Coach Ali Carey-Oliver.

"We had a tough preseason and saw a lot of growth with the squad. It's a nice final non-conference match to prep us for conference."

The Mounties (3-5) have played three top ten ranked teams (No. 5 Grossmont, No. 6 Moorpark, No. 9 Canyons) so far this season as well as two top-20 ranked teams, Cypress (No. 12) and Fullerton (No. 17).

Outside hitter Alysha Tullar led the Mounties with eight kills and 20 attack assists. Setter Brianda Valdez had six assists and two digs, while libero Malia Carr had three service aces along with nine digs.

"Alysha (Tullar) played great tonight," Carey-Oliver said. "She led the team in offense and remained consistent throughout the entire match. Without her we didn't really have a lot of offense."

In the first set, the Mounties were down 17-10 and fought back to tie it at 21-21, with five crucial kills by Tullar (2K), Jessica Morse, Ashlyn Stoddard and Lindsey Lane. However, Moorpark ran off four consecutive points to win the opening set.

Moorpark (8-2) led 12-5 in the second set and the Mounties couldn't recover to trail, 2-0.

The third and final set would go down to the last couple of points despite an early 5-1 hole the Mounties found themselves in.  Mt. SAC roared back to lead by one at 10-9,  which was aided by four Raider errors.

The lead switched throughout the rest of the set, with neither team taking more than a two-point lead. Tullar had a late kill which brought the Mounties to within a point, 20-19.  Moorpark, on a six game winning streak, then outscored the Mounties 5-4 to take the set and the match.

On Saturday (SEP 29), the Mounties will play host to Bakersfield (No. 11) and Butte at 10:30 am and 12:00 pm, respectively.
