(Long Beach, CA) In spite of rainy weather, the 2019 Beach Opener at Long Beach State took place as scheduled and saw several Mt. SAC athletes turn in impressive performances against competitors from the junior college and university levels.

Terra Valadez placed third for the women in the 100-meter hurdles, turning in a time of 14.76 seconds. Darla Gonzalez tied for first with Cal State Bakersfield's Julianne Finch in the pole vault, clearing a height of 3.68 meters. Teammate Amy Campos tied for fourth place with a vault of 3.38 meters. Javelin thrower Senna Forkner placed second in her event with a throw of 38.74 meters.

On the men's side, Chris Weiland (8:22.97) and Salvador Capetillo (8:32.02) placed first and second, respectively, in the 3,000-meter run. Calvin Oury and Ryan Lopez tied for fourth in the pole vault clearing a height of 4.08 meters.

"The weather didn't stop the men and women from setting new personal and season bests," said Mt. SAC's men's head coach Ron Kamaka. "Both squads continue to improve and grow as we prepare for challenging meets ahead."

Next up for the Mountie distance runners is the Occidental College Distance Carnival on Friday, March 8. The rest of the teams' athletes will participate in the Ben Brown Invitational at Cal State Fullerton on Friday and Saturday, March 8 and 9.
