(Walnut, CA) Congratulations to former Mountie Track & Field Student-Athletes Robyn Brown and Tiziana Ruiz who both medaled at their respective countries national championships this past weekend.
Brown, the 2014 California Community College State Runner-Up in the 400 meter hurdles, struck gold at the 2018 Philippine National Track and Field Championships which were held in Llagan City Isabela in the Philippines. Brown ran 1:01.80 to easily win the national title with a 4 second margin over the second place finisher. She will now represent the Philippines at the 2018 Asian Games which will be held in Jakarta, Indonesia from August 25th through the 30th.
Ruiz, the 2014 California Community College State Champion in the pole vault, captured the silver medal at the 2018 Mexican National Track and Field Championships (Monterrey, Mexico) with a best jump of 12'09"1/2 (3.90M). Ruiz will now represent Mexico at the Central American and Caribbean Games which will be held in Barranquilla, Columbia from July 29th through August 3rd.
Both women share many similarities including being teammates on the 2013 and 2014 track and field teams. Brown and Ruiz, both continued their education and athletic careers at the University of Hawaii (Manoa). Both train under their former Mt. SAC Coaches. Ruiz under legendary pole vaulter and current Mt. SAC Women's Head Coach, Giovanni Lanaro and Bryant, under 2018 South Coast Conference Assistant Coach of the Year, Jenna Bird. Both also follow in the footsteps of former Mountie Greats and two-time Olympians from their respective countries. Brown following, legendary Philippine and "Asian Sprint Queen", Lydia de Vega and Ruiz following Lanaro.
