Walnut, Calif. – The Mt. San Antonio College Women's Soccer Team is set to begin the 2025 season with a fresh, youthful roster and a strong sense of purpose. Following an undefeated 9-0 run through South Coast Conference play last season and an overall record of 14-6-3, the Mounties are aiming to build on that momentum despite significant roster turnover. Head Coach Juan Sanchez, who enters his sixth year as leader of the program, knows the challenges ahead with a group that includes 12 to 13 incoming freshmen, just five to six returning sophomores, and five transfers from four-year schools. "We've got a younger group this year," Sanchez said. "But at a two-year college, it doesn't matter if you're a freshman or a sophomore – you've got to be ready to step up and meet the challenge."

Though the team is still coming together, early signs have been promising. "They're learning our system, and that's what excites me," said Sanchez. "We're seeing that progress." Formation-wise, the coaching staff is still assessing the best tactical fit. With many of the new players showing comfort in a 3-5-2, the Mounties are exploring that setup. "We're trying to figure it out day by day. It really comes down to how they train," Sanchez added. A recent scrimmage revealed some unexpected standouts. "Some of the girls who hadn't stood out in practice really showed up in the scrimmage," he said. "They're gamers. That's what you want to see."

The season begins with a serious test, as Mt. SAC travels to face Phoenix College, one of the top ten programs in the nation. The following weekend, the Mounties will host a competitive home tournament featuring strong opponents Hartnell and Lake Tahoe. "We're going to be challenged right off the bat," Sanchez said. "And that's what we want. We're going to find out where we're at. I know this group is up for the challenge."

Leadership will play a key role in the development of this young team. Sanchez pointed to two players in particular who are expected to set the tone: Bella Gomez, a transfer from La Sierra, and returning outside back Kyla Bavaro. "They're two good leaders who are going to do well and guide our young players – not just on the field, but off it too," Sanchez said. "Having good leaders makes all the difference in building a strong team."

There's also a personal element to this season for Coach Sanchez, as his daughter joins the team after a long recovery from a major injury. "I coached her in club, so it's not that different," he said. "She's held to the same standards as every other player. It's been a long road back for her, and I'm proud that she's in a place where her heart and mind are right. That's all I ask for as a coach."

Despite the youth and the unknowns, the goals remain high. Mt. SAC has come close to a state title in recent years, with deep playoff runs ending in the quarterfinals and semifinals. Sanchez remains patient but focused. "Our goal is always to win the state championship," he said. "It took me 18 years to win one with the men's team. It's about being consistent, and it's about what we do day to day. It's a process – and these women are buying into it."

With strong conference opponents like Long Beach and El Camino looming, Sanchez knows nothing will come easy in the SCC. But with a tough preseason schedule, a committed group of newcomers, and experienced leadership guiding them, Mt. SAC looks ready to compete. The journey starts Friday, August 22 in Phoenix. Good luck this season, ladies!
