Mountie Women's Soccer stays unbeaten, takes second at Mt. SAC/Nike/Azteca Soccer Tournament

(Walnut, CA) Mt. San Antonio College (3-0) remained unbeaten this season with a pair of wins at the 2023 Mt. SAC/Nike/Azteca Soccer Tournament. On Friday, Sept. 1, the Mounties defeated Palomar College, 6-2, and on Sunday Sept. 3, they downed San Joaquin Delta College, 2-1. Even though they won both of their tournament games, the Mounties took second place behind Saddleback College due to the tournament's weighted scoring system.

Here are the tournament's final standings: Saddleback 18 points (goal differential: +7), Mt. SAC 17 points (GD: +5), Palomar 2 points (GD: -10), San Joaquin Delta 1 point (GD: -2)

Mt. SAC 6 Palomar 2

Goals by Veronica Aquino (Vivian Lopez assist), Natalia Reyes (Aquino assist) and Lopez (Alex Allen assist) put Mt. SAC up 3-0 by the 28th minute. Palomar battled back with a pair of goals to cut the Mounties' lead to 3-2 at halftime.

In the second half, it was all Mounties as Alina Valdez (Lopez assist), Kristin Mijares (Gabriella Sanchez assist), and Reyes (Aquino assist) added goals to seal the victory.

Anai Olmedo (45 minutes, three saves), Karissa Macias (25 minutes, one save), and Emily Vanderkallen (20 minutes) combined in goal to hold the Comets (1-2) to two scores.

Mt. SAC 2 San Joaquin Delta 1

In the 57th minute, Reyes broke a 1-1 tie with what proved to be the decisive score on an assist from Kathryn Davis. Aquino accounted for the other Mountie score, an unassisted effort in the 22nd minute.

Olmedo played all 90 minutes in goal for Mt. SAC, making five saves.

The Mounties return to action in Sacramento with a game at Cosumnes River College (0-0-1) on Friday, Sept. 8, at 5 p.m. and against Sierra College (1-0) at CRC on Sunday. Sept. 10, at 11 a.m.
