Mounties win third tournament in a row; Six wrestlers win titles at Modesto Invitational

(Modesto, CA) The Mt. SAC Wrestling team is off to its best start in years, winning its third consecutive tournament to start the season.

The Mounties last won state dual team championships in 2013 and '15 and finished as the state runner-up in 2017, but have not won a state title.

However, they have placed in the top five numerous times through the years.

Mt. SAC, winners of the West Hills and Santa Ana tournaments, came away with a resounding win in the Mike Tamana Invitational at Modesto College Saturday, Oct. 9.

The Mounties, currently ranked first in the state by the CACC, were represented with six out of the ten weight classes with champions.

The Mounties (174), won by 39 points over second-place Fresno City College.

Fresno City has won the last four CCCAA State Championships and 17 overall. The win for the Mounties at the Modesto Invitational was a marquee early-season victory, with two tournaments, four conference duals, and a CCCAA South Duals tournament still to go in the season.

Those meets all precede the CCCAA South Regionals and State Championships in early December.

Rounding out the top five teams at Modesto were Modesto, 3rd (144), Cuesta, 4th (73), and Skyline, 5th (68).

Eleven teams and 107 wrestlers competed in the one-day meet at Modesto. Mt. SAC was represented with 19 wrestlers.

Taking home the first-place trophies were: Christopher Betancourt, 125 Lbs., (3-0); David Saenz, 133 Lbs., (3-0); Mark Martinez, 149 Lbs., (3-0); Isiah Vazquez, 165 Lbs., (3-0); Wetzel Hill, 174 Lbs., (3-0) and Nate Kendricks, 197 Lbs. (3-0).

Six wrestlers placed second for Mt. SAC: Conner Diamond (125), Jason Valencia (133), Thomas Chapman (141), Billy Looney (149), Juan Lopez (157), and Jerry Rubio (165).

Ahmed Khattab placed fourth for the Mounties in the 197 weight class.

Mt. SAC will begin conference action with a dual meet at Palomar Wednesday (Oct. 13).
