(Walnut, CA) The 2018 Mt. SAC Wrestling season is underway and the Mounties sent two teams to compete in their annual Mt. SAC Duals.
Palomar College was the winner and the Mounties Maroon and White teams were both 3-1 in the 8-team round robin event.
Four Mounties had a perfect 4-0 record on the day.
Mt. SAC's Matthew Mejia (165 Lbs.), who placed third in the CCCAA State Championships last year, was 4-0. Also with a perfect 4-0 record was Adam Valdez (149 Lbs.), who also was third in state last year. Zach Cunningham (125 Lbs.) and Jackson Serna (Hwt) would also finish perfect on the day.
"I believe the future looks good for us," Mt. SAC Wrestling coach David Rivera said. "We just have to make a few adjustments by the end of the season.
"But I was very proud of how the team is coming together and is supporting each other."
In the first of three rounds the Mounties' (2-1) Maroon team defeated Santa Ana, 40-22, lost to Modesto, 23-22 in round two and beat East Los Angeles, 38-12 in the third round.
The Mt. SAC White team was also 2-1 in the three rounds, defeating Sierra College, 29-10 in the first round, losing to Palomar in round two, 30-15 and defeating Rio Hondo, 27-12 in the third round.
Modesto and Palomar won their pools with 3-0 and 2-1 records, respectively and Palomar defeated Modesto in the fourth round for the championship.
In round four, the Mt. SAC Maroon team defeated Sierra, 60-6, while the Mt. SAC White team defeated Santa Ana, 33-17.
ELAC defeated Rio Hondo in round four, 27-23.
The Mounties travel to Lemoore and will compete in the West Hills College Tournament this Saturday September 22.
