(San Luis Obispo, CA) The Mt. SAC Wrestling team will be well represented in the upcoming California Community College Athletic Association State Championships this weekend, as they qualified 11 wrestlers on Saturday at the Southern California Regionals at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo.
As a team they placed third (148.5 pts) behind champion Cerritos (205) and second place Palomar (171).
"The coaching staff is very proud of the way our wrestlers competed this past weekend," Mt. SAC Wrestling coach David Rivera said. "We qualified 11 out of the 11 (wrestlers) and that was one of our goals for this tournament."
However, coming away with a championship in the 149 lb. weight class was freshman Joseph Dominguez.
Domnguez, who wrestled at powerhouse Northview High School, won by decision, 3-1, in the finals and won all three of his matches by fall. "Joseph put a great tournament together and he keeps looking better every time he competes," said Rivera of Dominguez.
He was the lone champion for the Mounties as they qualified one for a second place finish (Reed South, 174), two in third (John Whisner, 125; Casper Sherow, 141), three in fourth (Elijah Diaz, 125; Kevin Kelly, 141; Kevin Hope, 165), three in fifth (Julian Melecio, 133; Apollo Santos, 157; Barnabas Yi, 184), one in sixth (Angel Alcantar, 197).
Mt. SAC entered wrestlers in nine of the ten weight classes and qualified at least one in each.
In the 174 weight class, South won both of his matches by decision leading up to the final match only to lose, 7-2.
In the days matches for the Mounties they totaled 34 wins, seven falls, two technical falls and one major decision.
