(Fresno, CA) The Mt. SAC Men's Wresting Team completed the 2015 season with a fifth place finish (85.5 points) at the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) State Wrestling Championships, which were held this past Friday and Saturday, December 11th and 12th, at Fresno City College (Fresno, CA). Terrill Sidner (149 lbs.) and Gio Castillo (125 lbs.) captured individual state championships in the respective weight classes.
Sidner (Beaumont H.S./Beaumont, CA) defended his 2014 State Championship with three straight wins, including two falls (pinned opponent) and a come from behind, 15-6, win over Fresno City College standout Martine Sandoval, in the championship match. Sandoval led Sidner, 6-0, in the first period, however Sidner roared back scoring 15 straight points to take title (major decision). Sidner was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the CCCAA State Wrestling Tournament.
Gio Castillo (Centennial H.S./Corona, CA) easily disposed of his first two opponents with a technical fall (ahead by more than 15 points) and a fall before a very close match with Fresno City College's, Julian Gaytan, where he pulled out the win with an 8-6 decision.
Jose Regama (2nd place), Kolton Martin (4th place) and Andrew Cruz (7th place) also medalled for the Mounties.
At 157 lbs, Regama (Montclair H.S./Montclair, CA) took second at the tournament after losing to conference rival, Aaron Negrette of Cerritos College, with a 2-10, major decision in the finals.
Kolton Martin (184 pounds) nearly finished in the top two places, but lost in the semi-final round, in overtime, to Jhalyn Hall of Santa Rosa, 3-4, before falling to Nick Rohrer of Sacramento City College in the consolation final, to take fourth.
At the 285 lb. weight class, Andrew Cruz (Roosevelt H.S./Eastvale, CA) took 7th with a third round, 4-3 decision, over Josh Davis of Bakersfield.
