(Paso Robles, CA) The Mt. SAC Women's Golf team finished with one of its best regular seasons in program history and finished as 3C2A State Runner-up on Tuesday, November 14 at Hunter Ranch Golf Course in Paso Robles.
After a challenging first day, where the Mounties finished sixth and were 11 strokes behind the leaders in the two-day tournament, a big second-day performance propelled them into second place behind state champion College of the Canyons.
With a team score of 660 (340-320), College of the Canyons took home its fifth state title since 2001.
Mt. SAC, which is the only other college with five women's golf state titles, finished 14 strokes behind COC with a team score of 674 (348-326).
Mt. SAC Women's Golf coach Art Guevara said after their sixth-place finish on Day 1, "We're 11 shots back and we're making a move (Tuesday)", he said. "The ladies are locked in." They were, as the four linksters improved 22 strokes as a team.
"We came back by 22 strokes," Guevara said. "It just was not enough to overcome the leaders."
Finishing off the top five schools were Reedley 675, (finished 3rd in a tiebreaker), Modesto, 4th (675), and Moorpark, 5th (691).
Highlighting the state championships for Mt. SAC was a third-place finish by freshman Kylie Lau with a two-day score of 153 (77-76) on the 5,424-yard, Par 72 course.
Lau, with her second-day score of 76 earned her a position on the 3C2A All-State team.
Finishing off a great two years at Mt. SAC were sophomore twins Kayla Loera, 12th (165) and Kaitlyn Loera, 30th (175). Freshman Alana, 40th carded a 181.
Leading the pack of 60 golfers was Citrus College's Isabelle Olivas-Lowell with a 148 (69-79).
