Mt. SAC Women's Golf Finish 5th Overall at Desert Classic

(Palm Springs, CA) With the temperature in triple digits in the desert, the Mt. SAC Women's Golf Team competed in its second tournament of the young season and finished fifth 663 (322-341) in the Desert Classic in Palm Springs at the Tahquitz Creek GC Saturday (August 31).

Leading the way for the Mounties with a second place individual finish was Precious Saelee with a two-day total of 147 (74-73). The low medalist, Monica Yu of Reedley, carded three strokes better with a 144 (73-71).

The temperature surpassed 110 degrees on both days of the 36-hole women's golf tournament.

Reedley College came away with a first place with a two-day total of 609, followed by host College of the Desert with a distant 635. Desert won the event last year.

Mt. SAC's Katherine Chan finished 16th overall with a 168 (80-88), while teammates Cristina Liu followed with a 172 (83-89), Lisa Romero 176 (85-91) and Kima Blake 205 (103-102).

After the first round of play, Saelee shot a 2-over par 74 to hold down the No. 2 spot in the tourney, behind Yu (73) with a 1-over in the sweltering 112 degree heat on the 5,206-yard course.

Reedley (316) held a slim 6-point lead over Mt. SAC (322) among the eight teams. Modesto was third (326), followed by College of the Desert (327), Santa Barbara City College (334), Cuyamaca (364), Mt. San Jacinto (403) and Bakersfield (471).

Chan was the Mounties' second best golfer with an 80, which tied for seventh among the 44 golfers.

The Mounties begin Orange Empire Conference action Wednesday (Sept.4) with Match No. 1 at Desert Willow Golf Resort in Palm Desert.
